Registration Policies

Self-Paced Courses

Before you register for your self-paced course, you must be aware of all the policies associated with your enrollment. Remember, you are responsible for all costs involved once your registration is complete.

  • Enrollment in self-paced and semester-based courses is open to both degree-seeking and nondegree students (see definitions below).
  • You may enroll in self-paced courses at any time during the year, and you will then have 6 months to complete the course. Students in NetMath and Math Teacher Link courses are an exception to this rule. They have 16 weeks to complete a course.
  • While you might be able to finish the course in less time than the six months allowed, you are not permitted to complete a course in fewer than six weeks. Since the primary concern of our courses is quality of work and mastery of concepts, you are encouraged to plan on a minimum of 10 to 12 weeks for the completion of a course.
  • ALL students, both degree-seeking and nondegree seeking, must register through our office for self-paced courses.
  • However, if you are a degree-seeking student at the University of Illinois, you will not be "officially" enrolled in a self-paced course section until college dean’s approval and full payment is received in our office.
  • Students only enrolling in course sections through Online & Continuing Education do not have the option to opt-in for University Student Health Insurance.

NetMath and Math Teacher Link Self-paced Courses

Both NetMath and Math Teacher Link courses are considered self-paced courses, but have some different policies that apply to them. Please make sure to visit the NetMath and Math Teacher Link websites and read policy information before registering for a course.

Student Categories

Not sure what type of student you are? Review our student categories below.

  • Degree-seeking students: These are graduate and undergraduate students who have already been accepted into a degree program offered by the University of Illinois. Transfer students are treated as degree-seeking students as they have usually been newly accepted in a degree program on this campus and are transferring from another institution to complete a degree. Potential transfer students (those who have not yet been accepted into a degree program, but are considering a transfer) should consider themselves nondegree students until they are accepted (at which point they will become degree-seeking students).
  • Nondegree Students: These are students are not currently admitted in a degree program on this campus. University of Illinois students at the Chicago and Springfield campuses are considered nondegree students.
  • Noncredit students: Noncredit students enroll in noncredit courses for their own personal or professional enrichment. They do not have to be admitted to a degree program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
