Eligibility

Self-Paced Courses

Enrollment in self-paced courses is open to on-campus University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign students, off-campus University of Illinois students, select high school students, students enrolled at other colleges and universities, and individuals studying on their own. If you have been dropped by the University of Illinois for either scholastic or disciplinary reasons, you may enroll in self-paced courses only with the permission of the dean or the committee responsible for your dismissal. Our office can provide the necessary form to be signed by your dean. The hours for self-paced courses do not count toward your part- or full-time status on campus.

Graduate Students

If you are a graduate student at any university, you may take our courses; however, you will not earn graduate credit. This DOES NOT APPLY to NetMath and Math Teacher Link students, who may receive graduate credit for courses taken. In some cases, you may be able to use undergraduate courses to meet prerequisites for graduate programs. Online & Continuing Education does administer graduate credit courses, using both face-to-face and distance learning delivery, on a semester basis for regular graduate credit or for CEU and CPDU credit. For more information about these and other programs offered through us, please call 800-252-1360.

High School Students

High school students (any persons 15 years of age or older who have never attended a collegiate institution) are eligible to enroll in self-paced and semester-based online courses to earn (depending on their institution) college credit, advanced high school credit, or both. In order to do so, however they must meet the following requirements and provide the necessary documents:

  • Evidence that he/she possesses the requisite background and ability to pursue profitably courses for which he/she is qualified
  • Written permission from high school guidance counselor or administrator upon enrollment
  • Cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 or better out of 4.0 (note: University Laboratory High school students: 3.0 or better out of 4.0)
  • Copy of official high school transcript upon enrollment

Students Requiring Special Services

The U of I Division of Rehabilitation Education Services (DRES) coordinates services for students with special needs. Please call 800-252-1350, ext. 34603 (V/TDD) at least six weeks prior to the beginning of the course to allow adequate time to make necessary accommodations.

Important: If a course is removed from the sponsoring department’s academic offerings after you have enrolled and begun work on the course, you must complete the course within the timeline as determined by the department.
